Say “Thank You”

“Dear God, thank you for the baby brother, but what I prayed for was a puppy.” Children’s Letters to God

Over the weekend, I was re-watching one of the old Super Soul Sunday episodes where Oprah was interviewing Maya Angelou. I could listen to her words 1000 times and never get bored because I hear her differently each time. As I continue to learn and grow, I hear and receive teachings from my mentors differently.

One of the things that stood out to me this time was her emphasis on saying “thank you.” Not just when things are good, but when things are really not good.

When something is taken from us, we should stop and say “thank you,” because it clearly is no longer ours to hold.

When someone we love leaves, we should stop and say “thank you,” because that relationship has clearly served its purpose.

When life feels empty, we should stop and say “thank you,” because it means there is now room for what wants to come into our lives next.

As I was contemplating this topic, I saw a client post this to my online group within minutes:

Thank you to my husband for the years that you loved me the best that you knew how. Thank you for the experiences of pain and sorrow because the contrast of those times opened doors to a life that is so incredible that most people wouldn’t dare to dream so big. Thank you for pushing me so hard that I am soaring back with a refusal to accept that life has to be mediocre, and filled with struggle and hardship. Had it not been for days and years of feeling powerless and victim to my circumstances, I never would have been awakened so fiercely to the path of possibility and freedom.

It’s all for us.

Even when it feels like it cannot possibly be to our advantage.

I trust that it is, even if I cannot see it from my current vantage point.

Thank you for the lovers that left.

Thank you for the employers that didn’t believe in me.

Thank you for the times when the very thing I wanted most did not happen.

If you’re in a dark time right now in your life, stop and say “thank you.” One day it will all make sense.

Here’s the link to the Super Soul episode I listened to this weekend. She begins speaking about this topic right around 4 minutes into the conversation.
