How Is This Possible In Coaching?

“What is now proved, was only once imagined.” William Blake

I’m in a coaching session with my new client Eve. She tells me about how she used to be so brave in her life, traveling to different parts of the world, running a marathon, even learning to fly an airplane(!).

She’s wondering how she got to this place where she feels genuinely lost after spending the last 12 years in marriage that never felt good from the start.

She’s wondering how she became so disconnected from herself.

And she’s been wondering what happened to that brave woman…and she wants that woman back.

And by the end of the session – our second coaching session together – she said, “How is this possible? How is it that I’ve only been working with you for a little over a week and I already feel a shift occurring within me? I feel hopeful again in a way that I haven’t felt in years? How could I be making this kind of progress so fast? I mean I was in therapy for four years and I never felt this way.”

I love seeing my clients begin to see what is possible and feel those shifts for themselves. I love it when they dive in and begin laying the foundation for real transformation in their lives and relationships.

This is how therapy and coaching are different; not one better than the other, just simply serving different purposes. In therapy, you’re going to look back to understand how you got to where you are.

But in coaching, you’re going to look at where you are, where it is you’re trying to go in your life and what’s keeping you from getting there. Where therapy can be a bit of an exploration that unfolds gradually over months or years, coaching is very focused work and that is why my clients experience transformation in their lives and their relationships very quickly.

When you get in your car and set the GPS to your destination, it never asks you about where you were yesterday. It just focuses on where it is you’re trying to go and guides you there via the quickest path possible.

It’s using that approach that gives people the opportunity to change their lives in a matter of weeks.

If you’ve been struggling for years or even decades….

Trying to get clarity in your marriage….

Trying to understand if it can be fixed and feel good again or if it’s time to lovingly release it…

Trying to heal after divorce or deep heartbreak…

Or even trying to find that brave woman who was once there, but just got a little lost along the way…

Then, I’m essentially your GPS.

It’s not easy work and I’m not inexpensive. I make no apologies for that. But if the alternative is spending years exploring, without ever really reaching your desired destination, there’s a cost for that as well. And I would argue time wasted and dreams abandoned has a greater cost than some effort and investment in yourself.
