The Inevitability of Change in Relationships

Last updated: Jun 25, 2019

“How strange that the nature of life is change, yet the nature of human beings is to resist change. And how ironic that the difficult times we fear might ruin us are the very ones that can break us open and help us blossom into who we were meant to be.” Elizabeth Lesser, Broken Open

We resist change, don’t we?

We don’t like it when things end.

Change can cause discomfort and we certainly aren’t comfortable with discomfort.

And yet….

We’re in a world where nothing – NOTHING – ever stays the same:

Our jobs change,

Our skills and passions change,

The place we refer to as home changes in location and structure.

Our bodies change over and over and over again.

Our level of knowledge and education changes over time.

Our friends change,

Our tastes and preferences change,

Our environment changes. (Yesterday, my convertible top was down, today it’s snowing…)

There’s literally nothing that doesn’t change, grow or evolve.

And yet…

We think our relationships are the single exception to that rule…

That our relationships are somehow omitted from the laws of the universe.

Our most important relationships can’t stay the same, because we don’t stay the same. We’re always evolving and changing as individuals and we’re either evolving closer together or growing further apart.
